Sunday Walk   Starting at Minchinhampton near the church and hoping for a typical cold, bright, dry winter’s morning, this circular walk takes in the tiny hamlet of Box offering lovely views across to Nympsfield before reaching Amberley. We use some quiet lanes and there are two steep climbs out of Nailsworth onto the common. Our walk then levels out and continues flat across the common, where we take our lives in our hands dodging golf balls. It is doubtful that the Winstones ice cream van will be on the Common, but if it is, the Leader will buy! Grade: Moderate. Distance 5½ miles. Visitors welcome. No Dogs. Talk by Arthur Price on Gloucestershire’s Underground Quarries   Arthur is a recognised expert in the geology of the stone trade, his research into the history of stone has made his knowledge invaluable to those sourcing matching stone for the repair of historic buildings. The End of Roman Cirencester     Cirencester was one of the greatest cities of Roman Britain. Did it end with a bang, a whimper or maybe just change into something else? The talk will review the evidence for what was happening in Corinium in the last decades of the 4th century and the opening decades of the 5th Century. It will also look at the evidence for the earliest Anglo-Saxon activity and come to a view on the fate of the town. Neil Holbrook is currently Chief Executive of Cotswold Archaeology.
